How to play

Overview

REMEMBER THE YAHOO! GAMES WORD GAME CALLED WORD RACER? It was basically multi-player Boggle, with some added features. Play either solo or with friends, the goal is to type as many words as possible to get the highest score by the end of 4 rounds. I've attempted to simulate the gameplay and rules of the original Yahoo! game as closely as possible. I made this game because I loved it when I was a kid.

NOTE: Best played on a computer or laptop. Not yet mobile-friendly.

Check out the Updates section for improvements I'm making to the game. I plan to add things like high scores, competitive mode where words can only be submitted once in a game, UI improvements, and more.

Objective

GET THE HIGHEST SCORE BEFORE TIME RUNS OUT. Type in as many words as you can find on the grid as fast as you can. The player that has the highest score at the end of 4 rounds, wins.

Gameplay

FIND WORDS BY CHAINING LETTERS. Letters must be at least 3 letters long. To form a word, each letter must be touching the previous letter either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. You can't have any jumps or skips between letters of a word. The letters will highlight to show how they connect on the grid. For example, the following grid shows the valid word "MATTERS" being formed:

YOU CAN REUSE LETTERS. What is a little different from Boggle rules is you CAN backtrack and reuse letters that you have already used. The following grid shows how you can form the word "DID" even though you're using the "D" twice:

SCORING, DOUBLE BONUS, TRIPLE BONUS. Each word you find has a 10 point base, plus 10 points for each letter. So the word "BUS" would be worth 40 points. For every letter that is in a BLUE tile, the word score DOUBLES. For every letter that is in a PINK tile, the word score TRIPLES.

See the image below. The "D" is a triple bonus, so the word "HID" has a value of 40 as a normal word, but final value is 120 due to the triple bonus.

GRID SHAPES, PLAYER SCORES AND TIMERS. The scores on the left side are the total scores across all rounds. The score on the right along with the words is the local score for just the current round. There are always 4 rounds, each round is always 2 minutes, and each round has its own unique grid shape.

Round 1 grid shape is a simple square grid with 4x4 letters.

Round 2 is a round diamond shape, with 2 double-score tiles at the top and bottom.

Round 3 is a double-square grid with triple score tiles on opposite ends.

Round 4 is a large word grid with a hole in the middle, and 2 double-score and 2 triple-score tiles on opposite corners. Remember to take advantage of diagonal letter connections on this grid especially!
